When you think of Vampire Weekend, you’d probably think of preppy sounding pop music, Cape Cod, or their breakout hit, A-Punk, not long-form improvisational Grateful Dead inspired jams. Only one of their songs break the six minute mark, the rest being roughly three to five minutes. So, what prompted front man Ezra Koenig to lead the band in this direction? Though it is a seemingly random 180 for the group, this change had been foreshadowed years earlier.
